About This Checklist

This checklist sets out the mandatory training requirements under the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards and the Aged Care Act 2024 (from 1 November 2025), alongside competency-based training evidence providers must collect.

It applies to all staff, including employees, contractors, associated providers, labour-hire, and volunteers.

Below, you'll find each training area mapped to relevant Ausmed training modules, courses, lectures, and competency assessments.

1. Rights & Person-Centred Care

Mandatory Requirement

Must train all workers in rights-based care & supported decision-making (incl. Statement of Rights)

2. Cultural Safety & Trauma-Informed Practice

Mandatory Requirement

Required under Standard 2.9.6(b)

3. Dementia Capability

Mandatory Requirement

Caring for people living with dementia required

Observation in practice, dementia communication assessment

  • Provide Support to People Living with DementiaTo ensure candidates have a thorough understanding of dementia, including recognising cognitive, psychological and behavioural changes, and to assess their ability to apply appropriate strategies to support communication, manage behaviours, and provide person-centred dementia care relevant to their scope and role.

4. Responding to Medical Emergencies

Mandatory Requirement

Required under Standard 2.9.6(d)

Evidence Required

Simulation/drill, observed response, CPR practical (if adopted)

Refresh Cycle

Induction + annual (First Aid every 3 yrs if adopted)

Competency Assessments in Ausmed

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)To provide basic life support to an adult in the event of a life-threatening event. Note: This assessment does not replace formal first aid training required for certification as a first aid responder.
  • Perform Choking First AidThe candidate will be able to recognise choking and assist a choking individual in an aged care setting.
  • Use the Stop and Watch Early Warning Tool in DeteriorationTo recognise and respond to early recognition of changes or declines in an individual's health status.
  • Recognise the Signs of Deterioration in Mental HeathTo ensure candidates can recognise, support and promote the mental health and wellbeing of individuals in their care.

5. Code of Conduct for Aged Care

Mandatory Requirement

All workers (incl. associated providers, volunteers) must be trained

  • Adhere to the Code of Conduct for Aged CareTo ensure staff understand their obligations under the Code of Conduct for Aged Care and are equipped to implement its principles and behaviours effectively within their workplace.

6. Complaints & Open Disclosure

Mandatory Requirement

Implied under Standards 1 & 2.9 (consumer rights, feedback)

7. Incident Management (All Incidents)

Mandatory Requirement

Workers must be trained in incident management obligations (not only SIRS)

8. SIRS (Serious Incident Response Scheme)

Mandatory Requirement

Workers must know reportable incidents, 'in connection with care', P1/P2 timeframes

9. Infection Prevention & Control (IPC)

Mandatory Requirement

Embedded across Standards (Environment & Clinical Care)

Observed donning/doffing PPE, cleaning/disposal, outbreak drill

Competency Assessments in Ausmed

  • Don and Doff Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)To ensure the safe and correct procedure of donning and doffing personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Hand HygieneTo ensure a person performs effective hand hygiene to prevent infection and maintain the individual's safety.
  • Maintaining a Clean, Safe and Hygienic EnvironmentEnsure cleaning an environment is performed safely and in accordance with infection control guidelines.

10. Working Safely in People's Homes

Mandatory Requirement

Good practice (risk-based, not statutory)

Field observation: lone worker risk assessment, safe transport

Competency Assessments in Ausmed

  • Identify Fire Safety Practices in Home CareTo prevent fires and provide safety in the event of a fire in the home care setting.
  • Transport an Individual Safely in a CarTo ensure that support workers demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and safe work practices required to transport individuals safely and comfortably within the home environment.

11. Support at Home Orientation

Mandatory Requirement

Required for role readiness (SaH program knowledge)

12. Personal/Clinical Care (If Applicable)

Mandatory Requirement

Driven by Standard 5 – clinical governance & safety

Observation & sign-off (medication support, wound care, continence, skin care, falls prevention, documentation)

Competency Assessments in Ausmed

  • Assisting an Individual with MedicationTo ensure an individual is safely assisted to take their medications from a dose administration aid (DAA).
  • Medication CalculationTo ensure the candidate is able to calculate the correct dose of medication prior to administration.
  • Observing Skin IntegrityTo maintain the skin integrity of the individual.
  • Prevent Pressure Injuries: Care WorkerTo ensure the candidate understands their role and responsibilities when monitoring the skin of individuals in their care.
  • Support Positive Food, Nutrition and Dining ExperiencesTo support a positive nutrition, hydration and dining experience for the individual.
  • Dysphagia and the IDDSI FrameworkEnsure the candidate understands dysphagia, applies the IDDSI framework relevant to their scope of practice, provides safe care support, and escalates concerns to support individuals with swallowing difficulties.
  • Monitor and Record Basic Vital SignsTo equip workers with the knowledge and skills to accurately measure and interpret basic vital signs for safe and effective care.
  • Conduct Blood Glucose Level (BGL) MonitoringTo ensure candidates are able to monitor and interpret blood glucose levels accurately, record findings, and take appropriate action when results fall outside the normal range.
  • Provide Effective Oral HygieneTo ensure workers are able to provide person-centred, effective oral care as part of personal hygiene and grooming.
  • Dress an IndividualTo ensure that candidates demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to provide safe, effective, and person-centred support to individuals with dressing.
  • Shower an IndividualEnsure the candidate can safely and respectfully support an individual with showering in a home care setting while maintaining dignity, privacy, comfort, and safety.
  • Bed-bathe an IndividualThe purpose of this competency assessment is to ensure the learner can safely and respectfully support an individual with bed-bathing while maintaining dignity, privacy, comfort, and safety.

13. Domestic Assistance & Meals at Home

Mandatory Requirement

Driven by Standard 4 (environment & safety)

Evidence Required

Observed manual handling, chemical safety, food safety practices

Refresh Cycle

Competency Assessments in Ausmed

  • Support Positive Food, Nutrition and Dining ExperiencesTo support a positive nutrition, hydration and dining experience for the individual.
  • Manual HandlingTo ensure workers understand their obligations regarding manual handling in their workplace.

14. Care Partners (Care Management)
