This Training Module covers the key principles and procedures that support safe and timely action during fire and smoke emergencies in acute care settings. This module will also explore common fire risks and prevention strategies, the Code Red and Code Orange response frameworks, evacuation categories, firefighting equipment and the safety systems that underpin effective emergency preparedness.

Describe the Code Orange evacuation process, including evacuation categories and types.

This Training Module is designed for healthcare professionals working in acute care settings who aim to develop their knowledge and understanding of fire safety and emergency evacuation procedures, to support safe, timely and effective responses to fire or smoke incidents within the hospital environment.
Why it's needed:
No one can predict when a fire or smoke emergency might occur in a hospital. Emergencies may arise from a fire, equipment fault, chemical spill or other unforeseen incidents. Research shows that many workplace occupants, including healthcare professionals, do not feel confident in knowing what to do during an emergency, how to evacuate safely or how to operate firefighting equipment.
Having pre-prepared plans and knowledge of emergency procedures is critical to protect patients, staff and visitors. Therefore, this training module aims to equip healthcare professionals with the skills and confidence to respond safely and effectively to fire and evacuation emergencies. This will enable healthcare professionals to take timely action, appropriately escalate and safely evacuate in accordance with hospital procedures, to protect patients, staff and visitors.
