Explore the ways in which community pharmacies can improve their ability to meet the needs of family carers of people living with dementia.

About this Course

This course will help you develop clinical skills that can be used in evaluating medication management strategies for people living with dementia and explore the ways in which community pharmacists can improve their ability to meet the needs of family carers of people living with dementia.

This course consists of 5 sections:

1. Introduction case study
   Work through a case study to exemplify why pharmacies need to become more dementia friendly.
2. Dementia friendly pharmacy
   Explore the ways in which community pharmacies can improve their ability to meet the needs of family carers of people living with dementia.
3. Medication management
   Investigate the medications used in the management of some of the symptoms of dementia.
4. Medications which should be used with caution
   Learn about the medications which should be used with caution in people living with dementia.
5. Case study
   Review what you have learnt throughout the lesson by working through a case study of a wife caring for her husband with dementia.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, staff should be able to:

• Describe the role of community pharmacy in assisting family carers of people living with dementia.
• Explain the principles of a dementia friendly pharmacy and the steps to becoming dementia friendly.
• Evaluate and promote the appropriate use of medications frequently used to support people with dementia.
• Identify medications to be avoided in people living with dementia.
