Geoffrey Ahern

Geoffrey Ahern is a senior mental health clinician and educator who splits his time between working with people in a mental health crisis in the ED setting and working proactively to educate other health professionals and the community about how to better understand mental health problems, as well as substance use and addiction. Over the years, he has gained extensive experience in emergency and trauma, rural nursing, alcohol and other drug counselling, and psychiatric nursing across both the public and private sectors. He holds a masters of health science (mental health and addiction). Geoff is particularly fascinated by the impact that exercise, nutrition, community, meaning and purpose, and practices like yoga have on a person’s mental health, as well as living a simple life of reflection, contentment and wonderment. Healthcare can be a hard job. Sometimes there is no praise or recognition for doing well. We don’t know what people are feeling or going through. People will always react differently to the same situation. We need to understand that people who are not going through a great time will have a negative impact on their health and work performance. We need to be able to listen and give assistance where needed and to let the person know that they matter. Positivity creates positivity which then greats higher work performances and outcomes. People matter, carers and patients. It’s important to understand how to build resilience and how to lead someone.

Great resource but it would have been better if we could hear what was being said in the background & if we could have viewed the video as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this resource, however it could have been greatly improved by: 1) the inclusion of the video the participants viewed 2) being able to hear the comments of the participants in the room 3) the presenter didn't need to continually keep moving - distracting at times
