Glaucoma Up-Close

CPDTime.
9m of CPD
Untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness. Despite this, among the estimated 300,000 Australians living with glaucoma, only half are aware that they have the disease. This may be because the onset of glaucoma can be a gradual one. So much so, that a significant amount of side vision will be lost before the individual has even noticed they have a condition.

What is this article about?

Glaucoma is the name given to a range of conditions that lead to optic nerve damage. This is the nerve that transmits signals from the eye to the brain to create the image we see. If a considerable number of nerve fibres are affected, the peripheral field of vision is lost - this loss slowly creeps toward the central vision. Currently, glaucoma cannot be reversed.

Very educational article and references all very current. Great refresher or learning tool. Other treatments in surgery these days is injections into the eye at the same time as cataract surgery as a preventative measure / delay of onset of glaucoma. Istents also are another treatment that is less complicated than the trabeculectomy surgery that was once common.

Sometimes I find it really hard to make time for my learning, but I was blown away by how easy it is with the Ausmed app. I can fit it in during breaks or on the bus to work.
