Develop your knowledge about specific types of dementia and potential underlying changes in the brain.

About this Course

Dementia Discovery is designed to help those new to the workforce, who may have limited knowledge about dementia. It aims to increase knowledge about dementia with tips on 'where to next’ for training and resources.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, staff should be able to:

  • Answer the question “What is dementia?”
  • Describe some basics for how the brain works.
  • Appreciate how dementia may affect day-to-day functions.
  • Identify regions of the brain affected by dementia.
  • Identify common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and Dementia with Lewy Bodies that may affect day-to-day functions.
  • Recognise the experiences of living with dementia, from the point of view of the person living with the condition.
  • Define ‘person-centred’ support and care.
  • Describe how a diagnosis of dementia may affect a person’s ability to communicate.
  • Describe the MESSAGE set of 7 communication strategies as one approach to supporting a person with dementia.
